Air Assessments - Norfolk
1. As part of a regulatory requirement, a study assessing the emissions and impacts of volatile compounds at a waste transfer station was undertaken by Harrison Environmental Consulting to assess the potential impact on human health and the environment. Mass balance calculations, emission rates based on published guidance, dispersion modelling and ambient air monitoring using diffusion tubes, were all implemented to model the VOC emissions from the facility. The derived long term and short-term concentrations, as well as the measured concentrations in air were compared with the long term and short term Environmental Assessment Levels (EAL) for air. This enabled a cost benefit consideration to be undertaken of enclosing the source of the VOC's.

2. Harrison Environmental Consulting conducted monitoring and analysis of emissions during the remediation of a former landfill site in Norfolk over a period of 6 months, with the total cost of the remediation phase of approx. £3M. This included designing and executing a sampling plan for volatile organic compounds, arranging appropriate testing and analysis and interpretating results relative to air quality standards and objectives. The results of the assessment were submitted to the local authority to support the conclusion that the air quality was not adversely impacted as a result of the remediation activities.
