The client wished to construct a steel fuel storage tank of 27m diameter by 10m height. Harrison Group undertook an intrusive ground investigation to assess the underlying soils and take samples for laboratory testing. The Glacial Till encountered was found to be soft and slightly organic in the upper few metres becoming firm then stiff with depth.

The findings of in-situ and laboratory testing were used in a mathematical model to characterise the likely settlement under the calculated load of the tank when full. The results enabled the client to select an appropriate economic foundation for the proposed tank.
