Site Investigation along Gas Pipeline Route - Norfolk

Harrison Group Environmental is very pleased to have been successfully involved with the 2nd largest construction project in the UK at the time of going to press, (the preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games being the largest). The GBP 400M recovered paper mill project, in King's Lynn, Norfolk, will house the largest recycled paper mill in the UK. In addition to contributing significantly to the preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the project, we have also undertaken the geotechnical site investigation along the 2.5km route of the underground pipeline - prior to its installation - which will provide gas to the mill.

SCOPE OF WORK
The site investigation was designed so that relevant information could be obtained in order to:

  1. Troubleshoot future problems arising during the laying of the pipeline.
  2. Ensure suitable pipe installation methods employed to suit the local ground conditions.

The fieldwork consisted of the following elements:

  • Cable percussive boreholes
  • Window sampling
  • Dynamic penetration tests
  • In-situ testing including California Bearing Ratio
  • (CBR) tests and Standard Penetration Testing (SPT)
  • Groundwater monitoring,
  • Geotechnical testing at our in-house UKAS accredited laboratory
  • Analytical laboratory testing of soils and groundwater.

An interpretative report of all the findings was drawn up. This included information on:

  • Ground conditions
  • Monitoring and laboratory test results
  • Settlement criteria & piled foundation calculations
  • Horizontal / directional drilling recommendations
  • Temporary road design

The site investigation was completed successfully and interpretative report issued within a tight timeframe to ensure that the construction project remained on the critical path to being operational by the required deadline. We worked closely with our client at all stages of the investigation.
